Santa Monica Museum of Art, CA Sep 10, 2011 - Mar 03, 2012 In Wonderland: the Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States North America represented freedom from European traditions for women Surrealists from the USA and Mexico, and those fleeing war-torn Europe. While their male counterparts usually cast women as objects for delectation and imagination, female Surrealists delved into their own subconscious and dreams. The knowledge they derived from such exploration empowered them to create extraordinary visual images, both personal and universal. Arranged thematically, approximately 175 works in a variety of media date from 1931 to 1968. A handful of slightly later examples demonstrate Surrealism's historical overlap and influence on the feminist movement. Iconic figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller, Kay Sage, Dorothea Tanning, and Remedios Varo are represented, along with lesser known or newly discovered practitioners, including Maya Deren, Helen Lundeberg, Maria Izquierdo, Jacqueline Lamba, and Janet Sobel. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA Jan 29 - May 06, 2012 Musee des Beaux-Arts du Quebec, Canada Jun 07 - Sep 03, 2012 Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico Sep 27, 2012 - Jan 13, 2013 Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy Curated by Sage expert Stephen Robeson Miller along with Jonathan Stuhlman of the Mint Museum, here is the long awaited exhibition exploring the relationship that shaped the astonishing landscapes of the two Surrealist masters during their 15 years together as husband and wife, with approximately 25 works by each artist drawn from public and private collections throughout the USA. Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC Feb 11 - May 13, 2012 Matisse, Cezanne, Picasso: The Stein Family The Steins, an American family, moved to Paris in the early 20th century: Gertrude, an avant- garde writer, set up house with her brother Leo, in the rue de Fleurus; her elder brother Michael took a flat with his wife Sarah in the rue Madame. Of special interest to our audience may be section VII 1920-1930: Post-Cubism and the Neo-Romantics, dealing with Gertrude's support of the group of young painters including Berard and Tchelitchew.
