 Lucien Coutaud   (1904-1977)

  Homme et femme
  • essencerelle on board, 1946
  • signed and dated 46 lower left recto
  • board size 13¾" x 10 5/8" (35 x 27 cm.)
The technique of Essencerelles, devised by Coutaud in 1946-1947 during his "Période Métaphysique", is a medium in which pigment is mixed with a solvent such as turpentine (as opposed to the more traditional combination with water) yielding a rich, deep color unlike that of water based paints.
