Passage to the Underworld   (Uberfahrt in die Unterwelt) Hommage to Patinier gouache on board, 2006 signed lower right recto signed, titled, and dated 14.02.2006 verso inscribed Hommage a Joachim Patinir verso image size 18 7/8" x 30 11/16" (48 x 78 cm.) board size 21 5/8" x 32" (55 x 81 cm.) Joachim Patinier (1480-1524) was the first Flemish painter to regard himself primarily as a landscape painter. His immense vistas combine observation of naturalistic detail with lyrical fantasy. There are only five known paintings signed by Patinier and definitively attributable to him.
