Dietrich Schuchardt
Hometown exhibition of recent gouache paintings & drawings by this leading master German surrealist. Marx Galleries, Offenburg In Wonderland: the Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States North America represented freedom from European traditions for women Surrealists from the USA and Mexico, and those fleeing war-torn Europe. While their male counterparts usually cast women as objects for delectation and imagination, female Surrealists delved into their own subconscious and dreams. The knowledge they derived from such exploration empowered them to create extraordinary visual images, both personal and universal. Arranged thematically, approximately 175 works in a variety of media date from 1931 to 1968. A handful of slightly later examples demonstrate Surrealism's historical overlap and influence on the feminist movement. Iconic figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller, Kay Sage, Dorothea Tanning, and Remedios Varo are represented, along with lesser known or newly discovered practitioners, including Maya Deren, Helen Lundeberg, Maria Izquierdo, Jacqueline Lamba, and Janet Sobel. Musee des Beaux-Arts du Quebec Jun 07 - Sep 03, 2012 Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico Sep 27, 2012 - Jan 13, 2013 Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy Curated by Sage expert Stephen Robeson Miller along with Jonathan Stuhlman of the Mint Museum, here is the long awaited exhibition exploring the relationship that shaped the astonishing landscapes of the two Surrealist masters during their 15 years together as husband and wife, with approximately 25 works by each artist drawn from public and private collections throughout the USA. Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC Feb 11 - May 13, 2012 Gordon Onslow Ford: Voyager and Visionary The first retrospective of the British-American Surrealist painter's work organized by an American museum in more than thirty years, featuring more than two dozen paintings by the artist and drawn entirely from the collections of his sister, Elisabeth Onslow Ford Rouslin, and nephew, Max Onslow Ford Rouslin. The exhibition will offer a full range of Onslow Ford's career, from early, more traditional canvases from the 1920s & 1930s, to his first Surrealist works in the late 1930s & 1940s, to later work from the 1950s forward, which took a more cosmic, symbolic approach to abstraction. Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC Feb 11 - May 13, 2012 Bound: Hans Bellmer & Unica Zürn Over 50 works created during the nearly two decades Bellmer and Zürn were lovers, from their 1953 meeting at Berlin's Galerie Rudolph Springer through Unica Zürn's suicide in 1970.
